Fort Meyers Kitchen Ruins
Both Meyers Spring (posted yesterday) and Fort Meyers were named for one of the Black Seminole soldiers who served under Lt. John L. Bullis. Fort Meyers was located in the canyon near Meyers Spring. The Fort consisted of 15 one room adobe huts and two stone houses all roofed with local Ocotillo. This capture is the remains of the kitchen as evidenced by the fireplace hearth. The Black scouts assigned here were known as "The Black Watch". The patrolled the area to protect settlers from area and prevent Indians from using the spring. After Bullis retired he lived for a time at the old fort in the canyon.
